Many people search for an exterminator when they find rats or mice, and it's worth knowing what that service often looks like. A typical pest control approach to rodents relies on bait stations, locked boxes of poison placed around the outside of the house, sometimes with bait used indoors as well. The stations are refilled on a recurring service contract, often monthly or quarterly. That model can reduce rodent numbers outdoors, but it doesn't usually include finding and closing the openings that let rodents into the attic or crawl space.

Poison creates problems of its own. Most rodent baits work slowly, so a rat that eats some may crawl into a wall void or under the floor before it dies, and the smell from a hidden carcass can fill a room. There is also the risk of secondary poisoning. Owls, hawks, bobcats, and other predators that eat poisoned rodents can be poisoned too, and so can a curious dog or cat. That harm to wildlife is a big part of why California has restricted many of the strongest rat poisons in recent years.

What to Know About Rat Poison in California

California has some of the strictest rules in the country on rat poison. The most potent products, known as second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides, were taken off consumer store shelves years ago, and a 2020 state law, AB 1788, went further by restricting most of their remaining uses. Later legislation, including AB 2552 in 2024, expanded those limits. The details vary by product and by who is applying it, but the direction is clear: the state keeps moving away from the poisons that do the most harm to wildlife.

Anticoagulant poisons work by preventing blood from clotting, which is why a rodent may live for several days after eating bait. During that time it can travel, and as it weakens it may become easier for a predator to catch. That is how poison moves up the food chain. Wildlife studies in California have found rodenticide exposure in many predators, including mountain lions, bobcats, and raptors such as owls and hawks. Pets can be poisoned the same ways, by eating bait directly or by eating a poisoned rodent.

None of this means every exterminator is careless; licensed pest control operators follow the rules for the products they use. It does mean homeowners have good reason to ask questions. Before signing a recurring contract, it's fair to ask what product goes in the bait stations, where they will be placed, and whether the service includes finding and sealing entry points. If the answer to that last question is no, the rodents in your attic may keep coming back no matter how much bait is set out.
